LibraryThing / Talis - Data Partnership Bears Fruit

Posted by Richard Wallis at January 10, 2008 10:21 AM

librarything LibraryThing launched today two new search sources, to assist their 300,000 plus members in adding their books to the 22 million already catalogued. This was announced by LibraryThing's Tim Spalding in his blog post The British Library, with thanks to Talis.

These sources are The British Library and the Talis Union of UK Public and Academic Libraries.

The British Library data set includes records for over 12 million books, serials, printed music and maps.

The Talis Union has been built over many years by professional cataloguers in libraries all over the UK. This data set is a treasure trove of rare, old and out-of-print records as well as quality catalogue records for mainstream items.

The addition of these sources will not only be of great benefit to LibraryThing Members in the UK, but also to those with UK originated books across the world.

This has been enabled through an agreement enabling LibraryThing use of data sets available in the Talis Platform.  LibraryThing has made available book jacket and ratings data from its services for loading in to Talis Semantic Platform stores, for integration with applications built upon the Talis Library Platform.

This is a great example of two innovative organisations cooperating together to make life easier for the global library community.

I am a LibraryThing user, and had been wondering for months why the British Library was not connected to LT.

Thank you so very much for working with LT! It is greatly appreciated by a number of us.
