Citeulike started as a personal project to help Richard with work towards his PhD. On the day he turned it on, nine people found it and signed up. Today 37,000 others have joined them.

A few comments that I would like to make about this:
1. CiteULike has the critical mass factor but its far from feature-led and Im not actually impressed by the somewhat hesitant responses to “What features can we expect”. An API is promising but haven’t we been asking for this for like, well ever. If you are intrested on doing something interesting with your references Bibsonomy.org has the features sadly not the critical mass.
2. It all comes clear now. Richard Cameron is not a developer (which explains it being built on TCL) - he is a hedge fund manager. I feel sick. Who else is now working on the project? A sales man. Fantastic - just want the users want. Lets build up a user base who put up with some lame bugs and then sell them down the river. The response to “so are you going to put adverts everywhere” wasn’t exactly clear: “nobody likes adverts…. Job adverts are a possibility”.
3. “Bibtech” has an X in it.
4. Would one of the partners that they have been talking to be talis by any chance?
