Thank Alain, I hadn't seen Morph eXchange.

<a href="http://talis.com/platform" rel="nofollow">Talis Platform</a> - yes, similar idea, but rather than acting as a runtime for code, access to hosted stores/services is entirely over HTTP so interfaces are entirely generic.

Count <a href="http://morphexchange.com" rel="nofollow">Morph eXchange</a>, Danny as one of those small PaaS players working via SaaS deployment model for Rails web apps.

Talis seems sort of like that too or is it? Not getting anywhere with Semantic Web but I'd sure like to understand more.

Best.

surely you mean google's 'monetality'. ;-)

in a a-life simulation i ran one time starting with random strings and competition based on non-linear games on the genome invarably one player would dominate the pool, followed by a long era of different mutant still battling it out with each other till i pulled the plug.

hopefully we wont return to the days of "my zx-81 is a lot better than your stupid commodore-64." except with web-apps.

to be honest :- i do think there is some sort of inverse trade-off here like time-space of computations but instead code-sophistication vs people who actually read the end-document.

is the phrase "built exclusively for ..." as scary as i think it is? [...] ;-)

One problem, ironically, is that the word semantic is open to connotation. The consequences of this have been long recognised in the science of semiotics but doesn't seem to be regarded as an issue among semantic web developers.

I always focus on the immediate possibilities - the things which can be done in a weekend of hacking to show off a prototype.

For instance, using GRDDL to scrape microformat information off of sites and provide a seamless transport of personal information.

Or having three different business applications that all speak their own versions of an xml vocabulary - unifying those into a common vocabulary and using RDF; plus mixing in existing standards like dublin core - then showing how an indexing tool which only understands dublincore can make use of that data.

For me, it's about the outcomes, and the magic that is under the hood remains just that - magic.

<blockquote>When the attention of the rest of the world is jerked suddenly by the inclusion of the word 'Semantic Web' in an important event, or when a technology or process they already use is affected, they will seek to answer a fundamental set of questions: "What's the Semantic Web? What does it mean to me? How can I get some?" From a techy's perspective, these questions are laughable.</blockquote>

The techies really should stop laughing and start answering these questions ... if they want to get funding for Semantic Web development. "Because it's cool" only works for gadgets with immediate eye appeal. Although Semantic Web implementations will ultimately have more value than the latest Stupid Web Trick, those benefits have to be spelled out for the people who make budgets. Its value is not immediately obvious (especially to non-technical people) so it must be articulated in business terms to gain support.

As I mentioned somewhere (FriendFeed I think). This was quite a good and rather polite beatdown. Should make for an interesting SemWeb Gang #2
