I would like to re-emphasize the last part of your comments: &lt;b&gt;the web is actually becoming less open than it has been of late.&lt;/b&gt;

This black-hole phenomenon is a side-effect of isolated social networking. But I believe that at the next generation Web the impact of this phenomenon is going to be reduced. People will start to recognize the long-term shortcoming of this strategy. And this recognition and its solution may be a key issue to the next round of web evolution.
